Job Overview

The post holder will carry out an apprenticeship which includes academic qualifications to reach a level 2/3 covering plumbing and heating, this is in parallel to on-the-job training and mentoring covering installation, repair, and replacement to a suitable standard, including an endpoint assessment and sign off as craftsman.

The post holder will undertake specific maintenance tasks, installation work, and repair across a wide range of plants and equipment. They are reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor/Manager.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake work in a safe and effective manner, complying with all relevant safety legislation, Health Technical Memorandums, and manufacturers manuals and procedures; to comply with Estates Department Health & Safety Procedures Manual on any work undertaken
  • Assist in the Carrying out of maintenance tasks including statutory, mandatory, planned preventative and reactive maintenance
  • The use of electronic devices, PDAs,s, and IPAD for work allocation and completion of planned works.
  • Learn how to Interpret and work from all instructions, drawings, and specifications appropriate to his / her background and training, often without supervision
  • Assist in the setting out of new work, (identify materials for ordering and collection) using relevant tools and equipment, often without supervision
  • Use a flexible approach to perform a wide range of the duties
  • Undertake specific maintenance and repairs after dedicated in-house training
  • Learn how to use and be competent in the use of all relevant tools and equipment within safety guidelines as necessary for the completion of works
  • Learn new techniques, with training as necessary
  • Have an understanding of the relationship of other engineering staff with theirs
  • Whilst undertaking out-of-hours duties advise Estates Officers and other Hospital Staff on maintenance issues as required

Carry out routine work such as:

  • Monthly testing of boiler standby fuel from gas to gas oil.
  • Yearly Boiler Insurance Inspections
  • React to all Boiler Alarms in a timely manner, reporting all incidents in the log book
  • Carrying out PPM checks and carrying out minor repairs to the whole Steam System as required
  • Plant room checks and reporting of defects
  • Water Hygiene, to include temperature monitoring, TMV maintenance & Water system flushing for Legionella control
  • Greasing, lubrication, and battery maintenance
  • Change of filters on AHU
  • Clearing drain blockages
  • Replacement of lamps
  • Checking the condition of fire doors
  • Planned Maintenance tasks
  • Painting and replacing locks
  • Investigation and rectification of minor faults
  • Generally, assist craftsmen in their work
  • Other semiskilled mechanical, electrical, and buildings repair or maintenance (within the job holder’s competence and capabilities) may be determined and directed by Trust Estates officers and Team leaders/Supervisors.
  • Change taps, showers, minor copper pipework alterations, drainage
  • Assist with isolation as directed on mechanical ventilation systems
  • Assist with Medical Gas systems works under the direction (following training)
  • First response air conditioning checks
  • Basic Building Duties, Painting, Plastering & Joinery
  • Carry out individual technical administration, by the timely completion of works tickets and the filling in of log books in wards and departments, as required
  • To undertake the safe use of maintenance equipment and portable tools
  • To assist with emergency work as and when requested, including out of normal working hours( within the range as stated depending on age)
  • Learn about the dangers of working in  hazardous areas, confined spaces, and on contaminated equipment using appropriate personal protective equipment and taking all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment in accordance with Trust policy and safe working procedures i.e. the post holder will conduct risk assessments and complete action/treatment plans for all tasks
  • Be fully conversant with all Trust policies and procedures including- fire safety, infection control, Health & Safety at Work Act, COSHH Regulations, and Heavy Manual Handling guidance and safe systems of work
  • Notify immediately the Estates Officers / Supervisors or equivalent of any problems within the hospital that may be a danger to staff and members of the public.  To ensure that accident forms are completed and co-operate with the investigation of any incident or untoward occurrence
  • Carry out site-based surveys and report all defects to the appropriate manager e.g. hazard notices
  • This role requires the use of equipment such as ladders and scaffolding
