Through the Environmental Health apprenticeship, you will gain practical experience alongside technical learning resulting in a degree in Environmental Health and putting you on a pathway to becoming a registered Environmental Health Practitioner.

About the role

You will be working alongside staff from teams covering a wide environmental health remit including; Food Safety, health and safety, environmental protection, and private sector housing.

After initially gaining an understanding of the broad range of work undertaken by the service and following completion of our induction process the successful candidate will primarily be based in the Food and Safety Team

As well as working towards a nationally recognized qualification you will be supporting more experienced officers and taking on tasks based on your developing skills. This will include carrying out food complaint investigations, assisting with food inspections, investigating infectious disease notifications

And accident reports, inspecting special treatments, conducting food sampling, and providing help and support to our diverse local businesses and consumers. You will also have the opportunity to be involved in initiatives to help improve the safety of the residents of Reading and have the opportunity to participate in collaborative food & safety work at the Reading Festival.        

There may be a requirement for some work outside of normal office hours and you will need a flexible approach to your work.

About you

  • You must have 3 A levels (grade A to C) or 80 UCAS points
  • You must a hold GCSE (grade A to C) in English and Maths
  • You will need to demonstrate proven ability and willingness to study and develop your skills and knowledge
  • It is recommended that the successful candidate have completed at least one A level in a Science based subject
